Same tricks as every other dealership

By Car Fun on 9/1/2019 at 3:15 PM. Helped by Rod Sanderson.

If you've ever heard of the rumors that car dealerships are a ripoff machine, it stands true here. Marietta Toyota's team makes the car buying process tiresome with all of the sales strategies they use. I just wanted a car. I actually came into the dealership with an approval (not pre-approval). So, the Finance guy seemed to be pretty bothered that I would not need their financing. From the moment they realized I wouldn't be financing through them and instead through my own loan, the customer service shifted from stellar to ok at best (and that's being generous). I took my approved loan to a different dealership and received amazing service and the car that I wanted. The age old bait and switch review by Newbuyer is very true. I wish I had seen that review before stepping foot into Marietta Toyota.

I would not recommend this dealer.

Dealer Still Works the Old Fashioned Way! That's not good!

By Car and Plane Guy on 8/25/2019 at 2:57 AM. Helped by Don't remember..

With all of the resources available to a consumer these days. You would think a dealer would be straightforward with you, these days. Well, not today! Wanted to purchase a 2019 Toyota Camry SE (Red with Ash interior). I determined both the cash value ($13K) via Carmax and Carvana and retail value ($16k) of my trade, a 2016 Hyundai Sonata in mint condition. So I wanted $14,500 for mine, splitting it in the middle. My favorite saleslady was no longer there, but I got a replacement, who seemed pretty nice. This complaint is NOT about him. I told them upfront what ($8,000) I was willing to pay plus my trade for their new car. Of course, they sent me out on a test drive (old practice), while they 'worked out' the numbers. The idea is that a customer will fall in 'love' with 'their' new car on the test drive. I see cars as functional, meeting a need (well, except for an Audi A4 with a manual transmission, it gives me shivers). One of the manager's wanted my keys to do an appraisal (I never release my keys, I have to go with you in 'my' car). He did his appraisal. After the test drive, some other guy, I guess another manager says I can have the new car with almost $16,000 upfront plus my car. He wrote down excitingly that my 'current' vehicle was worth only $10,000. Yes, let's that sink in. A car that I could take to Carmax or Carvana, that would get a minimum of $13,000, he wanted to offer me $10,000 for mine. Remember, that is $4,500 below what was my cars 'high' and 'low' price average. By the way, I work in a rental car business in the department affiliated with selling or auctioning our vehicles. I'd told them that upfront, hoping to avoid this game. Here's what the manager/negotiator was doing. He was 'lowballing' my trade-in, even worse that Carmax did (yes, they lowball too, but it gives you a baseline to work up from). So in simple terms, the idea was to offer the 'lowest' price for my car, and the 'highest' price for their car. Their car's Maroney was about $28,000, but with the add-on sticker of things like nitrogen in your tires (80% of the air you breathe is nitrogen, duh), a plastic protectant on the hood, tinted windows and more at prices way above what you could do this for yourself aftermarket. So in general terms, this is how it works. He offers me about $10,000 for a car he will clearly be able to sell for at least about $15,000. That is a $5,000 profit, right! Yeah!. Then he wants to sell me their car, not only for the Maroney (sticker price to you), but for the additional $2,000 worth of add-on junk above the sticker price. In generalization, that is about $5,000 and $2,000. Wow, $7,000, what a profit, right? Here's the kicker, even if he had sold me his car for the Maroney price, of $28,000, he still has additional profit to be made. Why? Because I had my nephew's bill of sale for a similar Camry, just purchased this week. My nephew's Maroney was about $27,000 (his dealer did not have the add-on inflated value items on the vehicle he purchased). He drove his car out the door for $22,500. That's right he purchased a Marony price $27,000 2019 Camry SE, out the door including taxes and fees for about $22,500. So that means even at the Maroney price, my nephew's dealer still made a profit. How? It comes from rebates and incentives that are not publicized to you and me, The last tactic of this negotiation process, was for the negotiator to slowly back off of their original price and "give'' you a 'discount' off of the over the top extra profit, that they would make in the first place. When you balk at their original price, it goes something like this. "What if I give you an additional $2,000 off, then they swirl a circle in dramatic flare around the $2,000 reduction in the already over-inflated $7,000 price beyond the Maroney. It is easy to get lost in the excitement of seeing a number go down, but unfortunately I did not get lost in that. Because it was still way more than I willing to pay. When that doesn't work then you get another slightly smaller offer reduction and so forth. The intent is to get you to do what we used to call in marketing, 'a sharp end close. Which sounds something like this. "If I can get you $3,000 off, then do we have a deal (paraphasing here)?". In the end, for me the answer was, 'no'. But two good things happened. One I was not there more than 1.25 hours, my nephew wore his dealer down by sitting there until everyone, but the manager and an assistant had gone home (7 hours), wow). I don't have that kind of patience. Two, I went home with my good current car and no cash lost out of my pocket. So let me be clear. This is what happened in general, in my transaction. You may get a different approach from a different salesman and different manager, if you go to Marietta Toyota. Nor will I say anything to defame them and I am not implying that they were trying to cheat. Basically, they were using old fashioned, worn out tactics on me (that must work on somebody with less knowledge), to get as much from me as they could, and not provide a reasonable and fair deal (in my opinion) for both of us to be profitable. For yourself, just be aware of these tactics from 'any' dealer, if you want to save money and make what most of us would consider a 'reasonable' deal. Be prepared to walk away, you are the buyer and you have what they want. I love 'Clark Howard', the consumer guru and 'Consumer Reports', for helping me hold my own, this time. Yes!

I would not recommend this dealer.

Vehicle not properly inspected before purchase

By Dee on 3/17/2019 at 9:21 PM. Helped by Tori, Shawn.

I purchased a used vehicle from them last week that wasn't properly inspected before it was sold to me. The next day the VSC light came on along with the engine light while I was driving to work. After my boyfriend brought up an issue with the struts that he noticed while we were test driving the vehicle. The manager Shawn informed us that the struts were replaced on the vehicle and a mechanic confirmed that they weren't. After an argument the struts were replaced Thursday but the check engine light is still on and they refuse to do the necessary things to fix it. I understand when you purchase a used vehicle some things will occur but not the next day. I feel cheated because I trusted them to sell me a reliable car, I could have just bought one from someone on the street. The only reason I am giving them three stars is because my sales person Tori was amazing from the time we walked through the door until we left. He has been very helpful in assisting us in this matter and did everything he could to ensure that we were satisfied customers.

Age old bait and switch

By Newbuyer on 3/8/2019 at 3:24 PM. Helped by David Swaggerty, Malachi Carter.

Extremely poor customer service. Used the age old bait and switch and tried to sell us a different model car for the price negotiated even though we have it in WRITING.. they refused to honor the agreement made between the manager David Saggerty, sales associate Malachi Carter and myself. RUN from this dealership as we wasted so much time and effort.

I would not recommend this dealer.

New Truck Buying experience

By lmtpop on 1/3/2019 at 1:54 PM. Helped by Aaron Pittman.

Aaron Pittman and Marietta Toyota did an excellent job. I was looking for 2018 Tundra which they did not have but began looking around the Southeast for one at another dealer. Each one they found was was sold at the local dealer before we could get it. They ultimately honored the price negotiated for the 2018 on a same trim level 2019. Aaron was very pleasant to deal with and I hate buying new cars and he made it a very pleasant experience. I would highly recommend this salesman.

Salespeople lie

By Stephen Jaffe on 12/11/2018 at 2:35 PM. Helped by Eric Robinson. Ric Frazier.

The Entune system was described as having Traffic capability and GPS. The Traffic app can not show the map for the area we live. It can only show the Atlanta Metro area. The GPS can not show a map either, it only shows the step by step instructions in text. The Scout GPS link that you have to load on your phone does not provide a location map, only turn by turn directions in text. The salespeople will tell you it has a GPS but it does not. No upgrade path.

Great Purchase Experience

By MLSHAW on 7/31/2018 at 2:22 PM. Helped by Malachi Carter.

The moment we walked into Marietta Toyota we were greeted by Malachi Carter. Malachi was a refreshing change to some other dealerships we had visited and made us feel comfortable. He took his time and answered all questions we had and explained the differences in the various trim levels so we could decide what was best for our needs. After driving 3-4 different vehicles, both cars and SUVs, we zeroed in on the Camry XSE. We are and have been Lexus owners for many years and know the value of Toyota's vehicles. The entire process, which included a couple visits, was very smooth thanks to Malachi. I dare say it's because of him that we chose Marietta Toyota. I would HIGHLY recommend both Malachi to anyone that is looking to buy a Toyota. Sincerely, Mike and Linda Shaw

Simple and Honest Folks

By Tsooli on 5/17/2018 at 6:37 PM. Helped by Jimmy Wilson.

We had the unusual situation of buying one new car and then returning it and buying a different car just a few months later. Our dealer worked with Costco, which I believe helped keep the price down. Other dealers/sellers were unable to match the price for the car we returned. Every effort was made to help us find the car of our choice and although it did not work out, a suitable replacement was found. All the folks we dealt with were friendly, kind and thorough. Our salesman explained everything to us, even though we had previously owned a similar car and knew most of the information. Can't ever have too much information! Highly recommend Jimmy, a long-time employee!
